What I Learned at the Movies - Death at a Funeral

What I Learned at the Movies – Death at a Funeral

I went to the movies this weekend and saw ‘Death at a Funeral’. The 2010 version is a remake from the highly, acclaimed British comedy. I had an opportunity to see the British version last year (hilarious) and the American version this weekend. I had my doubts, because the first was a comedic masterpiece. So, I viewed the movie with a skeptic eye, but it is just as funny as the original if not more. It has the same writer for both screenplays, just a different cast. The American version has the following stars: Chris Rock, Martin Lawrence, Zoe Saldana, Loretta Divine, Danny Glover, Tracey Morgan, Columbus Short, Keith David and Ron Glass (from Barney Miller).

The movie is about a family coming together for a funeral for a father of two adult sons. His last dying wish was for his funeral to be at his home. For an African American family, that is a recipe for unwanted excitement… Even though it is a movie about a funeral, there is a lot that can be learned from it.

Ten Things I Learned From the Movie ‘Death at a Funeral’

1. A true friend will pick up your grumpy, abusive uncle, wheel him up a hill, drug the person who is blackmailing you and help get rid of a dead body.

2. Always wear gloves when helping someone to use the bathroom

3. Never take other people’s prescribed medication

4. Every man loves their momma

5. No woman is good enough for a mother’s son

6. No man is good enough for a father’s little girl

7. The world looks better from the rooftop

8. EVERYONE has secrets

9. Family are the only ones who will love you in spite of your faults and shortcomings

10. You only have one life to live, so live it to the fullest

Remember, a film has gone its job if it entertains and enlightens.
